Word Decoding & Comprehension
SpellRead™ is an intensive, phonological auditory training intervention for students of any age who are significantly behind in decoding, regardless of the reason. In 2007, the Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse website rated SpellRead as the #1 group intervention for reading comprehension. We teach it individually, which increases its effectiveness even more. It is also a highly effective method of teaching English-language learners.
Specific Reading Comprehension Deficits, or S-RCD, describes a condition in which a child decodes words well but does not sufficiently comprehend the meaning of what is written. Hyperlexia is another situation in which there is a discrepancy between relatively well-developed decoding skills in the presence of comprehension difficulty. Focused Reading™ uses research-validated strategies to dramatically increase comprehension in kids with these (and other) issues.
"In an era when we can image the brain as an individual reads and literally see the brain at work, it is unacceptable to have children and adults struggling to read when they could benefit from what modern neuroscience has taught us about reading and dyslexia." Sally Shaywitz, "Overcoming Dyslexia"
